Joint Applications Development Workshop (JAD)
The objective of this workshop is an analysis of the current data warehouse architecture and consensus building for the specification of a new enterprise-wide framework for data warehousing and business intelligence based on best practices. This will move stakeholders toward agreement on a new data warehousing architecture and infrastructure capable of better supporting current applications and quickly deploying future requirements. Representative issues that may be reviewed and discussed include:
- Identify business drivers, sponsorship, risks, and Return on Investment for the data warehouse and associated analytical applications. Review business objectives of the organization. Deliverables from this workshop include an information business model; summary of best practices, standards, and guidelines; specification of an information delivery architecture and components; definition of specific requirements for each of the business units that require information delivery support; identification of a road map that will get client from its existing information management structure to the new model; and identification of the first set of implementation objectives.
- Survey user needs and identify required functionality. Information sources for this workshop include business analysts, financial analysts, operations personnel, and personnel in each of the business units represented.
- Review the current application architecture. An important objective is to identify current, non-integrated, stovepipe applications, and evaluate how these applications can be integrated within a common, enterprise-wide data information management and data warehousing architecture.
- Review alternative, long-term, enterprise data warehousing architectures in detail, including recommendations on system architecture, platforms, components, tools, system software, communications, and networking.
- Identify a representative initial subject area that will utilize best practices and review the functional requirements for the initial subject area.
- Discuss details of a project plan for the successful implementation of data warehousing applications.
- Assess core issues, critical success factors, best practices, costs, phasing, scheduling, skillsets, resource planning, and risks associated with the recommended architecture and project plan.
- Summarize the consensus that has been reached on the specification of a new enterprise data warehousing architecture and infrastructure.
